The world lost a legendary college football coach today. Joe Paterno lost his battle with lung cancer at 85 years old. More importantly, his family lost their husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather. Rest in Peace, Joe, for you were well loved by your community and your family.
I am disappointed to see so many people that wished Joe Pa ill as he was lying on his death bed. I am even more disappointed to see people celebrating his death. Death is never a thing to be celebrated. Ever. Period. End of story. Death is a sad finality to a story that may not have a proper ending.
Joe Paterno did what he thought was best at the time. Hindsight is 20/20. Foresight? Not so much. Also, are we really going to let that define his lengthy and successful career at Penn State? Really? I, for one, will not let it define Joe Pa for me. He wasn’t perfect. No person is. I will still hold him in high regards. I hope his family knows that they have our support in their time of grieving. And I hope it’s enough to give them some comfort to know that there is still celebration of their loved one’s life and legacy.
To the Paterno family: I wish you all the best in this trying time. I hope you take comfort in the memory of Joe’s life, legacy, and love. I’m truly sorry for your loss today.
